Things to Do with Kids

It is time once again for the Elizabeth Stewart Writing Contest in honor of the late Miss Liz, who was a remarkable Youth Services Librarian at Palo Alto City Library.

Kids and teens grades 3-12 are invited to participate. A virtual awards ceremony for all participants will be held in May. Winners will receive a grand prize and the opportunity to read their stories at the awards ceremony!

Visit the Exploratorium in March and look for profiles throughout the museum that honor historic and contemporary women in math and math education, each one paired with a specific exhibit!

Among others, learn about programmer Ada Lovelace, the first person to realize the full potential of one of the earliest computers, the analytical engine; mathematician and scientist Katherine Johnson who calculated critical orbit trajectories for dozens of space exploration missions; mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman and first Iranian to be honored with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics; computer scientist Grace Hopper who, among other things, coined the term “debugging”; and UC Davis professor Mariel Vázquez who studies the shape of DNA.

Join Old Sturbridge Village as they celebrate cultural heritage through music, dance, storytelling, and poetry during Celtic Celebration!

Visitors will learn about Scottish and Irish heritage, and the ways it shaped 19th century New England. During this event, guests will have the opportunity to hear fiddle tunes, bagpipes, and music by Celtic musicians. Returning this year, musicians Cate Mahoney and Shelley Otis will be performing on the harp. As you explore the historic Village, discover a variety of demonstrations and unique activities to participate in; play a game of Rounders, an Irish game similar to baseball, or see a character presentation about an immigrant’s experience in early 19th century Ireland and America.

New this year, the Village is welcoming a team of guest Highland Cattle for visitors to meet and learn about this iconic cattle breed!

Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day at the Maple Grove Community Center by rocking colorful socks!

Enjoy carnival games, music, and a fun, festive atmosphere. March 21 (3/21) celebrates those with three copies of the 21st chromosome. Socks were chosen as a symbol because the karyotype of Down Syndrome chromosomes resembles mismatched socks! Each year on March 21, people around the world show support by wearing bright, mismatched socks.
