Research consistently shows that bilingualism can boost kids’ cognitive, social-emotional, and developmental skills. While many schools offer language classes during the year, language immersion camps are a great way to help kids strengthen those skills during the summer months.
That’s where SELA: The International Private School comes in. It’s an immersive Spanish camp on Massachusetts’ South Shore that goes beyond traditional classroom learning with STEAM and eco-inspired activities for a summer of learning, play, and discovery. As a parent of two kids at SELA for nearly two years now, I could talk forever about how much we have loved our experience and being part of this community. I’m thrilled to sit down with Molly O’Neill and Laura Sullivan, Admissions & Enrollment Specialists, to hear in their own words what exactly makes SELA’s summer program so valuable for so many families.
Maddie: Thank you both for being here! Can you give us an introduction to SELA’s summer program and what makes it unique?
Laura: Absolutely! At SELA, we’re all about inspiring curiosity, empowering leaders, and shaping tomorrow. Our summer program is a full Spanish immersion experience combined with hands-on STEAM and eco-inspired activities for kids from infants through elementary age. It runs for a total of 11 weeks from early June to late August. We have two locations: one in Hingham for infants through sixth graders, and one in Norwell for infants through PreK.
What sets it apart is that it’s not just “summer camp” in the sense of filling days with activities. Everything is intentional and thoughtfully designed. Kids get to explore, experiment, build, and play, while naturally acquiring language, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills. We’re proud to equip kids with critical skills for success both during their time at camp and beyond.
Molly: Think of SELA summer camp as an extension of our school-year program, with the same warm and supportive environment, but with a program focused on nature and sustainability.
Maddie: Before we get into the program itself, let’s pause for a minute. Spanish immersion. Does this mean that kids need to already speak Spanish to participate?
Laura: Not at all! You don’t need any prior Spanish experience to join. That’s actually why our program exists. And its very design serves both beginners and native speakers alike. Language is embedded into every activity through songs, routines, play, and hands-on projects, so kids pick it up naturally and confidently, without feeling intimidated.

Maddie: How do teachers help kids get comfortable and up to speed as they learn Spanish?
Molly: Our teachers are known for creating a loving, caring, and warm environment. They genuinely love what they do and that shines through every day. They use repetition, clear routines, and individualized support to meet kids where they are. For example, they’ll guide a student step by step through a new phrase or activity, modeling it multiple times, and encouraging kids to try it themselves. Students who are older and have more language experience also love to help the younger and less experienced ones. It’s very sweet.
Laura: We also have a vertically-coherent curriculum, which means that each lesson builds on the previous one and is reinforced in multiple ways. So let’s say they’re studying farm animals. In language, they learn the words and pronunciation. In art, they learn how to draw these animals. And then in science, they learn about the animals’ homes and natural habitats. So by combining hands-on learning, peer support, and consistent exposure, kids quickly start understanding and using Spanish naturally in various contexts.
Maddie: I think we could talk about how amazing SELA’s teachers are for days. They truly make the difference. Going back to the summer program, it was a total hit in my household last year. Can you share more about its design and themes?
Molly: Definitely. Our summer program is called Eco Amigos and is designed by our wonderful Academic Director, Paola Chamorro. Rooted in project-based learning, each week brings a new, hands-on theme theme inviting kids to connect closer to the wonders of the natural world:

From caring for plants and vegetables to exploring the fascinating lives of microcellular organisms, insects, and reptiles, each week is a new adventure that sparks curiosity and exploration.
Maddie: How would you describe the overall “feel” of SELA’s camp to a parent wondering if it’s the right fit for their child?
Laura: The vibe is warm, energetic, and playful. Classrooms and outdoor spaces are buzzing. Kids are challenged and engaged. But it’s never forced or overwhelming. Everyone gets to go at their own pace.

Maddie: I can confirm that’s the vibe I feel every day when I pick up my kids. There is a sense of belonging here that’s hard to describe. What moments show you that kids feel that too during the summer program?
Laura: We wish we could be a fly on the wall all day to see the magic happen. But we do get to see some of those moments, and it’s really those little breakthroughs where a child actually grasps what’s going on. When they realize they understand in Spanish without having to think about it. For younger kids, it might be picking up a new Spanish phrase. For older kids, it might be collaborating confidently on a STEAM project on our digital coding platform, Scratch.
Maddie: If a parent only remembered one thing about their child’s SELA summer experience a year from now, what would you hope it is and why?
Molly: That through language and cultural exploration, their child developed confidence, curiosity, and independence that sticks with them not just for the summer when they’re here, but for life.
Maddie: Any logistical tips for parents considering SELA?
Molly: Our camp registration process is like a shopping cart. Families can sign up for any of the 11 weeks they choose, including part- or full-time schedules, for anywhere from two to five days per week. We offer extended AM and PM hours for parents who need extra childcare, too.
Laura: We also offer a 15% discount to families who register for a minimum of three weeks by March 1st. We definitely encourage any families to register as soon as possible to take advantage of that discount!
Maddie: Any final thoughts for parents considering SELA?
Molly: Our summer program is an opportunity for kids to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a safe, joyful environment. By blending Spanish immersion with hands-on, play-based STEAM learning, we create an experience that kids love and parents trust. It’s more than a camp; it’s a summer of discovery, growth, and lifelong skills.
We can’t wait to kick off another incredible summer of Eco Amigos and we hope you’ll join us!
